Penpal Dating

by Matt Savage on February 1, 2010

Back in the day, before the Interwebs came along, there was such a thing as Pen Pals. The concept of a pen pal was that you basically write letters, with an actual pen and paper, to another person or friend who is a long distance away. It was kind of a neat concept at the time, when we were more closed off, communication wise, to other parts of the world. Having a pen pal allowed one to share a bond with someone of a different culture and become pals. Now a day’s, with the exception of email, that concept has basically died.

When the practice of having pen pals did exist, there were of course stories of people getting involved with penpal dating, in other words people who develop a strong relationship through the mail, they end up as dating penpals.

It’s really fascinating to me that this type of penpal dating existed, it almost feels like it was the equivalent of online dating, except not nearly in such a large quantity. Though similar, there is a big difference, and that is the ability to create a bond with the other person through a physical object like ink on a piece of paper. There is something that is a lot more intimate and charming about the process of dating penpals.

I’m almost curious to actual try something like this, though not even sure were I would begin. I suppose I could sign up with a penpal service and try to find a nice girl to become penpals with and just see what happens.

I actually do enjoy writing letters, though these days it’s mostly through email. Actually, now that I think about it, it’s all through email. It’d be pretty cool and a heck of a lot more personal to send some snail mail every once in awhile. It’s even nicer when I receive a personal letter in the mail, which doesn’t happen too often. I think my grandma is the only person who sends actual physical mail to me, like postcards and hand written letters, it’s always nice.

So, out of curiosity, is there anyone out there that has had or still does have a penpal? Is there anyone who’s gotten into a relationship in this way, through penpal dating? Let me know your thoughts down below in the comments.
